Worried about Parvo
« on: July 17, 2010, 10:21 AM »
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some reassurance or suggestions...
We bring our new puppy home in two weeks and, as suggested by a forum member  ;D, we know that it is a good idea to avoid parks and public areas frequented by dogs until he has received all of his puppy shots. My issue is this: My boyfriend and I live in a VERY pet friendly townhouse complex. The complex has its own fenced in dog park and trails, but unfortunately all of our green space is shared. I don't have my own "yard" that I know to be safe and parvo free. I've spoken to our vet and he just kind of shrugged and told me to avoid the neighborhood dogs as best I could. He also mentioned that parvo can remain in the grass for YEARS!!! Is there anything I can do is this situation to reduce our little guy's risk? :-[
Thanks!
Jill

He should come with a certain amount of immunity, but it is best to be safe.  I would keep him out of the dog park even in your community for a few weeks.  He won't need a lot of structured exercise for a while.  Yes, it's true Parvo can remain in the ground for a long time.  But if you live in the city, you don't have much choice.  I think some people have resorted to wiping the feet with Clorox when you come in, but I am not sure about that.  I would go with what your vet suggests and you probably will be just fine.  He is more attuned with your neighborhood and what is prevalent.  If your neighbors take care of their dogs and are not breeding or haven't gotten their dogs out of puppymills or pet stores, you are probably safe as all responsible breeders are extremely careful about parvo if nothing else.

The clorox/water mix should be a 10% diluted with 90% water.
If you clean their feet after they have been  outside that will reduce the chance of them licking it off their paws.

I would like caroline said, aviod other dogs and the higher populated areas as best as you can.

Parvovirus is difficult to kill.  A bleach solution of at least 30 parts water to one part bleach is the only known household disinfectant proven to kill the virus.
