Vacuum cleaner
« on: July 13, 2010, 09:56 AM »
Why does my puppy attack the vacuum cleaner?  I can't take it out of the closet before he starts barking furiously and will not stop until I put the thing away.  My two older dogs just hide in another room, but this puppy thinks it is a monster!

uh oh  ;)

Mine also beleive it is a monster. It took some time to desensatize them to it  :)
I think the noise and back & fourth motion of the vaccum stimulate many dogs.

Try taking it out and putting it into the middle of the room and giving him a treat when he goes near it and touches it. Let him get comfortable with it off and still -
After he explores it off, Have your husband turn it on and correct Misha when he reacts to it - ask him to leave it and treat him when he ignores it.

New puppies, ahhh how much fun!

perhaps a response to something learned from the breeder's home?
Some people...younger generally, love to chase the dogs with those sort of things...another object is the broom.

...but it is a simulated chase - catch motion.   ???

my pups are taught those things early...the see, smell it stationary they hear the sound even before they are up walking and playing.

First they hear the voom from another room.  I carry the puppy slowly into the other room...they hear it and see it moving...but not up close.  Gradually add more time and closer...and finally walk the pup through the room...on leash while hubby is vacuuming on the other side of the room.  Encouragement is needed to get the pup past the 'monster' and out of the room to be throughly rewarded once into the other room or outside.

He doesn't care about it when it is stationary.  I have it in the hall frequently and he can walk right past it without even looking at it.  It's the noise and the fact that it seems to move on its own--he doesn't associate me with the the movement of the machine!!  I think I am on my own on this one.  Either he will get over it, or he will have to be crated when I can't stand the noise!

I haven't said anything in a while so thought I would chime in. We make a game out of the vacuum cleaner at my house. Of course, I too got the constant barking in the beginning cleaning stages until I actually took the suction end to Ben' side one day.  Now he thinks it is a game to try to grab the hose end before I suction him with it. He will stop when I tell him to go lay down.  I agree with keeper, kinda of stimualtion noise chase thing, he also likes the hair dryer..LOL I just make it fun at our house!

Ha ha, this is so funny. Both George and our BC HATE the vacuum ... I must say I have teased them now and again when they refuse to move from the area I'm trying to clean but they really hate it when its running ... sometimes biting the head or just barking and running way. As soon as its switched off, they approach it and the playing around ceases.

Kaiba would run over as soon as he heard me get the vacuum cleaner out the cupboard.  He would bark at it and snap at it, it wasn't just a puppy thing either, he never grew out of doing it.  Silly doggy!

Caroline - there must be something genetic about attacking the vacuum.  Here is a video of Misha's sister, Nova, and the vacuum - pretty funny!

That's funny!  Turns out it is not only the vacuum, its the broom and the mop as well.  He obviously doesn't believe in clean floors!
