Discharge .. not for the weak of stomach!
« on: July 12, 2010, 12:01 PM »
George has developed what can only be described as a 'messy' discharge from his penis ... more noticable on a morning when he's just got out of his bed. His bed is stained and so is our kitchen floor which needs mopping daily.

He's had this for a number of months but it was a very small amount which recently seems to have increased. We've not had him to the vets as he doesn't seem uncomfortable (and we're guessing he's not contracted an STI!) but its unsightly when he's ouzing this stuff on to our floor and furniture.  :o

Depending on the amount of discharge, this could be totally normal for a male dog.  If it's just a small "drip" on occasion it's probably just what I've always called "love drops".  Something you'll have to learn to live with....  If it's more than just a drop here and there, then a trip to the vet is probably in order.

If it's the "normal" love drops, most males are pretty good about cleaning themselves so a drop here or there is about all you see, however I have come across males that have owners that have a thing about their dogs cleaning themselves, and correct the dog for licking...in those cases, the drops can seem to be excessive.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pam!

Thanks, well it doesn't sound out of the ordinary in that case ... (he's our first Ridgeback) but we have no comparison. I suppose if he's been in his bed all night, he has a some 'build up' as its not excessive during the daytime when he's moving around. He does clean himself which we allow as its 'just what dogs do'.

Maybe my partner just needs to 'man-up' when she's complaining about the 'love drops'? ;D

From what you have described there's no need for a trip to the vet.  Sounds like normal "male discharge". :-)

And a little advise to you from me....better not tell your partner to "man up", that could land you in the actual dog house!! ;-)
