Life savers for new puppy owners
« on: July 09, 2010, 10:00 PM »
Hi!
I am a first time RR owner ( well actually our little guy won't be ready to come home for 3 more weeks ) and am trying to determine what products I should have ready and waiting when the puppy arrives. I've discovered some of the Ridgeback trade secrets over the course of my research, like a dremel for nails and the life stages adjustable crates. My question to all you pros is what products have you uncovered that have been invaluable to you? What are those hidden gems ( toys, treats, shampoos, beds, ect.) that, through trial and error,  you have found to be safe, work the best or last the longest. Point this newbie in the right direction! :)
Thanks in advance!

A good supply of Nature's Miracle -- they now make one for hardwood floors as well as carpets.  I find that the Woolite Oxy Carpet Cleaner actually removes stains better than Nataure's Miracle, but not sure it is as good for removing stains.

For treats, I use Charley Bears.  They are tiny and can fit in your pocket easily.  Why dogs like them I don't know, but they do.

A dog dish that the puppy can neither flip over nor chew.  I use a heavy ceramic one.

A container for dog food that puppy can't open or chew through.

A Kong toy that you can stuff with treats and will keep the puppy busy for a long time.

Toys that can't be pulled apart easily.  Kong is now making a long snake that has a squeaky in the tail, but no stuffing.  The stuffing is dangerous if they can get to it and eat it.  Beware of rope toys as if they are not made well puppy can pull strings out and swallow them causing no end of problems inside.  I find one of the best toys is an old sock with a tennis ball tied in the toe.  They can shake it like a rat and  you can use the leg part of the sock to throw the ball further.  Just stay out of the way of the ball when the shaking starts!

A baby gate to close of areas you don't want puppy to go iinto, e.g., walk in closets where you keep your shoes!

A good quality leather leash.  Never use a leash made out of chain, they will rip your hands up and while the nylon leashes are very cute and colorful they will leave rope burns on your hands.  Leather is the only way to go.

Don't buy any dog beds for puppy until the puppy is done with the chewing stages.  Just old towels or blankets will do just fine until adulthood sets in.

A stainless steel water dish with rubber ring on the bottom so it can't be scooted around the floor and some kind of rug to put under the water dish to help prevent falls from splashed water on the floor.
