So Indy has started his counter surfing and garbage can raiding adventures.  He is USUALLY pretty good, but if he gets bored or if you leave something REALLY tempting out he will go for it as soon as you leave the room.  I've seen the snappy trainer thing, etc etc... I'm not payin 10 bucks for a mouse trap with a piece of plastic attached to it.

The solution to Indy's Counter Surfing?

Regular plain old $0.75c mouse traps, turned upside down, with a small wad of paper towel under the fake cheese to make it less sensitive.  I put 8 of them around my kitchen and two on my bbq grill outside.  The trap goes off when he jumps on the counter and hits it with his paw, the action of the trap makes it jump in the air violently, and make a loud snapping noise.  Since I've been typing this, he snapped two on the counter, and one on top of the garbage can.  I'm extra evil and made sure he saw me put a pig ear up on the counter  ;D ;D

I give it a week and he won't go near the counters.

:D I Love it! I will have to keep that in mind when Safi gets tall enough to start exploring those places

Thats a great idea.  My biggest challenge right now with Odin is that if I leave a room hes gona jump up on any counter or high surface there and start pulling stuff down.  Food or not.  He also reallly likes getting into my kitchen garbage can.

try putting chili powder on the garage can... Indy hates that stuff and usually stays away now

The mouse traps worked great this morning.  I baited him with a treat on the counter... went to take a shower.  I came out and he only set off the one on top of the garbage can.  He probably just sniffed at that and hit it with his nose

These are great idea's! "Bo" is 5 months and started putting his paws and face on the counter. When did you start the traps for Indy? I usually always have an eye on him, but would like to relax Soon!

We have cats and I dare say, the traps could result in injury for them or a young dog.

Try setting the dog up with a treat and sitting out side the room with a spray bottle of Vinegar and Water  ;)

You can also order a scat mat with a slight "kick" to teacher counter avoidance.

With any dog, they will all try to get away with stealing food. It is always a good idea to teach leave it and when you can not be around, sometimes putting food away is always a smart option  8)

It depends on how well your will can be asserted and how compliant the dog is.
