Long Haul Flight

Hello All,

I wanted to say thanks to all those who had terrific ideas for me when I posted about being relocated to London for work.  You were all so generous with your ideas!  Thanks to the economic downturn I had a relative who took an early retirement package and was therefore able to care for Bogie during the 6 month "quarantine" wait period before he was eligible to follow me to the UK.  Thankfully, I've been able to fly home nearly every month to see him which has worked well.  I have managed, albeit with much difficulty, to find an apartment in London which will allow a dog and allows me a reasonable commute.  My company had to pay a HUGE security deposit but at least it's sorted.  I truly don't know what folks do who don't have a company behind them and need a dog friendly apartment.  I have lived in Chicago and Boston and found it relatively  easy to find apartments in both places.  London has been a completely different story.  The landlord required an 8,000 pound or nearly $12,000 security deposit!   :o  I nearly fell over.  Nonetheless we have a little place to call home that is next to a huge park called Hampstead Heath which has acres upon acres of wooded land to run around in.  My real concern is over the flight from Boston to Heathrow.  I would to hear from anyone who has experience with transatlantic flights and carriers that took good care of their dogs.  I think a few of the folks on here have flown dogs over for crufts perhaps?  He has flown on a few intra-US flight before but none longer than 3 hours.

Thanks again,
Melanie

How to make yourself popular - sit in the cat bed despite having a dog bed in nearly every single room!  Just a few funny ones I took when visiting Bogie over Christmas.   ;D

I have heard that BA is pretty good.  It's been a long time since I shipped Zack from the UK.  I think you need a strong crate, that is not a wire crate.  I know Zack had one built for him.  It was solid wood with vents in the side and a very solid grid in the front.  I believe you have to tape food to the top of the crate, but the shipper would tell you all that.  His bedding should be something that he can't get tied up in.  Shredded paper is good.

Glad you managed to find an apartment.  Yes, finding accommodation that is reasonable in London is extremely difficult, but it sounds like you have found a great location with Hampstead Heath close by.  Once you get out of London you will find lots of wonderful trails to walk.

By the way, the Beans who breed Rekaylahn Ridgebacks, (Sarah, breeders of Scotty's Sammy) now live in London.  Not sure where but they should be in the Yearbook when it arrives.

Hi Melanie,
Bogie looks too cute in the cat bed!
Glad some of the ladies have had suggestions on transport for Bogie as I have never shipped a dog  :) but I am so glad to hear you are getting settled and you and Bogie are soon to be reunited in London!

Best,
Melissa

We shipped Buster to Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines.  They were great.  We shipped Lucy and Buster from Hawaii to Texas on American Airlines.  Also great with no problems.  Did I mention that Buster hated his crate but still did fine?

How great that you and Bogie will be reunited!
