George at 7 months
« on: March 15, 2010, 02:10 PM »
Well George is growing very quickly now ... he seems to be entering the 'Gangly' teenager stage ... his body and legs seem to have been stretched!  ;D

George is looking good.  He is a big boy and may take a while to get everything together.

lovely photos of a handsome dog.  Now tell us how he is doing with training, tricks, etc.   ;)

Thanks for your kind comments ... I agree he is very handsome, but I would wouldn't I!?  ;)

Tricks and training ... well he'll do anything for food which I suppose has made life easy as far as obedience is concerned. We live near a very wide open space where he can run and not get into trouble (apart from tripping the odd jogger up!) but his retrieving skills are poor. He seems to get bored quickly and when on his own, just leaves what ever has been thrown where it lands for me to pick up. However, if there are other dogs around, he'll either chase after the other dog or most of the time he prefers to let other dogs do the retrieving bit and then 'ambush' them when they return to try and claim whatever they're holding in their mouths!

have you taken him to obedience classes?
there are some great ideas on this forum of how to train, do fun things, AND even retrevial work.
I know we all have limited time...but sometimes it only takes 15 min a day to teach them a trick.

It seems the hardest thing for me to get my dogs to do is come EVERY SINGLE time I call - NO MATTER WHAT.   ;)
They are all reasonably good separately  - however add another dog or more...and I may as well not even call them...unless I have their favorite treats.

I've not taken him to obedience classes ... want to do a few things myself as its about me and George learning together. He seems to respond quickly new instructions. He was peeing on the decking outside which he'd done since bringing him home (our fault) but after telling him only once after 3 months that he need to do it on he grass, he's not been on the decking since. I'll take a look at the tricks/training as it'll be fun, thanks for the tip!

Well I suppose they are so caught up in playing that they don't hear (or choose not to!) you calling and carry on playing. George is pretty good at returning to me ... if he doesn't come on the first call ... a deeper louder tone usually gets a response ... followed by crashing into me and some fussing to let him know he's been a good boy.
