When you rescue dogs, you get used to heartbreak. Often it happens without even getting to know the dog. We frequently see animals and hear stories that make us question whether there is such a thing as “humanity”. But once in a while there is that connection with a dog. The one that grabs you by the heart and never lets go? You know the dog I’m talking about – he’s the one that despite your best efforts to find an adoptive home won’t say goodbye. He chooses to become part of your family, and at some point you realize that there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.
That’s how it was with Fletch. When we took in this seven year old foster dog, we had no intention of keeping him, but Fletch had other ideas. Always a clown and a thief, he’d grab whatever he could from the counter – his favorite was whenever Martha baked and he could get his paws on a whole stick of butter. But this thief won his welcome. He stole his way into our home and stole our hearts.
Those same hearts are broken today. After months of fighting DM, Fletch took his last walk and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Fletcher, we’ll miss you terribly my friend.
