FAQ: How do I put a picture in my post?
« on: April 14, 2006, 01:43 AM »
There are two ways to insert a picture:

1) The first method is the preferred method (see the note below), but it is the more complicated of the two methods.  You can link to an image you have posted on a website or other webhost.  Click on the insert image icon which is the second icon from the left in the second row of control buttons when you are posting.  That will create a set of image tags.  Between the tags, enter the URL of the image which will be somthing like http://www.mysite.com/images/fido.jpgWith this method you can put a picture anywhere in the message.

2) If you don't have access to a place to host your images, you can upload your image to the site by clicking "Additional Options" which is below and to the left of the text entry box.  Once there, click on browse and find the image on your hard drive.  This will upload the image to the site and insert it at the end of the message. Only .gif and .jpg files that are 60KB or less will be accepted by the site.

Also, images that are uploaded will be deleted if space becomes an issue, so method one is the preferred method if you have access to a webhost.  There are also a variety of services that will host images for you, such as www.photobucket.com so you can use option one.  If you post your photo to Photobucket or a similar service, the image will remain available indefinitely, so it is a better solution.  Using a service llike Photobucket also reduces the storage and bandwidth needs for hosting RR-Forum which will help us make sure this site remains free, so we definitely appreciate those who can take the time to learn this method.

Keep in mind that there are online instructions for the forum available by clicking on Help at the top left of your screen!

Hope that helps,
Micah

Hi sorry to be a pain but I can't seem to do either option. I can't attach a photo to a post via additional options because it only shows me "Notify of replies", "return to this topic" and "don't use smileys"... although I would like to say in this one descussion it comes up with the browse option (but not in any of the other posts I have tried).
Also I started an account with photo bucket and tried that way but it didn't do anything, and I can't use my pic as an avatar either.
I have saved my pic as a jpg and it is only 38kb???

Thanks

Mell

Mell, first off, you need to have the photo hosted somewhere else:  flickr, smugmug, a homepage, etc.  Anything with a URL.
You need to find out that URL;  perhaps the easiest way is to right-click (or control-click) on the image and "copy image location".

Go to the test board here and try a post;  when you post you have a range of buttons above your input window.  You need to click the image insert button right above the smileys when you post.  This will create a
Code: [Select]
[img][/img] pair.  Paste the image URL in between.

Hit "preview" to see if it works before you post.

I have an earlier post about avatars;  let me dig it up.

EDIT:  here it is:
